Federico
Cozzucoli was born in Messina in 1972. He left Sicily at the age of
nineteen and began his theological studies. In 1999 he obtained a
degree in Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University of Rome.
Later he discovered his vocation as an artist and tried to mediate
theology with art. He enrolled at the Pontifical Gregorian University,
where he studied the themes of sacred art and graduated as Operator for
the Cultural Heritage of the Church. At the same time he attended the
Nude School at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and had his first
exhibition experiences. The main artistic expression of him is the
performance, which combines the experience of the liturgical rite of
the Catholic Church with syncretistic elements of pop culture and high
culture. For the artist, contemporary Catholicism is characterized by
popular devotion and theology that attempts to confront the cultural
world. These themes, treated in a not-confessional way, are the subject
of his videos, photographs, paintings, digital works and sculptures,
but it is necessary to reiterate that the most of the artistic works
have born for his performances or have developed as a result of these.
Since 2010 he has lived in Sardinia where, in a quiet environment rich
in sea and nature, he has the opportunity to meditate and deepen the
themes of his work. He is President of the cultural association "Gesto
Segno Disegno" founded in 2011.
