Federico
Cozzucoli was born in Messina in 1972. He left Sicily at nineteen to
undertake theological studies, which he completed in 1999, receiving a
bachelor's degree in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in
Rome. Subsequently, discovering his vocation as an artist, he sought to
mediate theology with art and, to deepen the themes of sacred art,
enrolled at the Pontifical Gregorian University, obtaining a diploma as
an operator for Cultural Heritage of the Church. During this time, he
also attended the Free School of the Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts
in Rome and began to exhibit. His primary artistic expression is
performance, where he blends the ritual liturgical experience of the
Catholic Church — now experienced with detachment and distance — with
syncretic elements from both pop culture and high culture. His artistic
actions reflect the elements that characterize contemporary
Catholicism: popular devotion and high theology, themes that, treated
non-confessionally, are both subject and object of his works created
using multiple techniques: video, photography, pictorial and digital
reworkings, and sculpture. Since 2010, he has been living and working
in Sardinia, dedicating himself to producing new works and engaging in
exhibition activities. In 2011, he founded the Association Gesto Segno
Disegno with the aim of bringing people closer to contemporary art,
which continues to curate personal and collective exhibitions,
participatory art projects, and artistic communication activities.
